Wow, was I surprised!! What a remarkable, moving, visually beautiful, musically excellent and unusual treatment of the loved oratorio. Just listening to it would be fantastic, specially with countertenor Bejun Mehta taking all the traditional alto solos, but seeing the story unfold of the family of two brothers of a man who committed suicide, and the impact on all their lives.....what can I say. Simply stunning in every aspect. One said they had no idea why a horse head was used (I have a theory) and another interviewed the designer. He explained some choices but not the horse head as I recall. His explanations did not make too much sense to me but such is art. Anyway, a lot of opera still to fit in. I like it all. I am glad Opera seems to be flexible in the productions unlike other art forms. we don’t require the chorus in Nabucco to be Jewish. It seems the film industry is heading towards stricter adherence in the actors playing a character. I am interested to see the Salzburg production of Salome on medici.tv, Although this article is making me wonder about some of the production choices, https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/03/arts/music/salome-strauss-salzburg-castellucci.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Farts&action=click&contentCollection=arts&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=5&pgtype=sectionfrontAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00603883343118850559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3245314665139759027.post-30579182540188698032018-07-28T22:10:57.859-04:002018-07-28T22:10:57.859-04:00I kept wondering about the glove but also: both Ca...I kept wondering about the glove but also: both Carlo and Philip have the hots for Rodrigo :DRowena Shepardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07680273211678135320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3245314665139759027.post-59760031298741451452018-07-04T13:10:11.846-04:002018-07-04T13:10:11.846-04:00Where I live now, there are no toll booths; if you...Where I live now, there are no toll booths; if you don't have the little electronic thingie, they just take a snap of your license plate and send you a bill for 49 cents.Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16322512607114908183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3245314665139759027.post-52564727219560318942018-06-26T02:55:04.178-04:002018-06-26T02:55:04.178-04:00P. Reflecting on Herheim’s “Death” dude, I keep remembering that the entire production is taking place in Rodolpho’s head as he tries to make sense of Mimi’s death and what led up to it. So if I don’t like that character, I should blame Rodopho, not Stefan. (I’ve been reading Charles Osborne’s.m “The Complete Operas of Puccini” which goes in depth on the original plays/books on which the operas are based.)

So putting this “flashback” frame around the opera is legit. One may quibble that a given frame is distracting and I admit I found Guth’s was pretty far out. That said, I think it’s always worth a look at his work. He usually does a great job on the Personenregie.
Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16322512607114908183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3245314665139759027.post-89192680211790885332018-06-25T10:46:21.319-04:002018-06-25T10:46:21.319-04:00I haven't watch Guth's Solaris/Space Odyss...I haven't watch Guth's Solaris/Space Odyssey Boheme, the idea kind of put me off, but perhaps I should have.DtOhttp://definitelytheopera.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3245314665139759027.post-89449869483520440992018-06-24T21:27:52.784-04:002018-06-24T21:27:52.784-04:00Hi!
