<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">Here's my semi-annual blog post. I am putting it here mostly for me, because I really want to be sure to see these <a href="https://www.lamonnaie.be/en/sections/388-mm-channel" target="_blank">three Mozart/Daponte operas</a>! <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">I just experienced the Tales of Hoffmann from La Monnaie as well. I was a bit disappointed in the concept with most numbers sung in front of a microphone (I get why they did it, but I found it annoying after the fifth or sixth time), and by Patricia Pettibon, who seemed very stressed. </span><br />

<div style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">Love, like, or hate them, I am always glad to experience productions from La Monnaie. And, as I said, I am looking forward to these Mozarts (and Pique Dame and Rosenkavalier.) Their video streams usually are up for about six weeks, starting right after closing night. Some are available on other platforms. </span><o:p></o:p><i style="font-family: georgia, serif;">Hoffmann </i><span style="font-family: georgia, serif;">is on arte.tv, and it's geoblocked in the United States; but you can access it with a VPN.</span><br />

charming to watch <i>as well as </i>to listen to. No <a href="https://regieornotregie.blogspot.com/2018/02/gratuitous-friday-jakub-jozef-orlinski.html" target="_blank">breakdancing</a> this time, but, oh, what singing!</span></span></div>

Much good advice for singers. And Mr. Hampson also provides great guidance for the accompanist. I always find a few tidbits I can apply to my own music-making and/or life as well. Highly recommended! And there will be another one tomorrow morning. </span><br />

Based on this episode, they don't just consider the music or explain the plot; they delve into how the music reflects the character's thoughts and feelings in relation to the story. </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This episode is a refreshing glimpse into the mind of the singer and character as Diana Damrau narrates Violetta's big Act 1 finale. </span></span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">She discusses how the music reflects Violetta's thoughts and emotions. I felt like I was being let in on the musical process, as well as Ms. Damrau's thought process as an actor/singer.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Host Rhiannon Giddens, who studied opera at Oberlin before embarking on a folk music career, called on two additional commentators to reflect on the cultural setting of the opera and the mindset of a woman in Violetta's position: Cori Ellison is the company dramaturg for Santa Fe Opera; and Brooke Magnanti, a writer and former escort (yes, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">that</i> kind of escort). <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The discussion is insightful, thoughtful, and informative; and it’s not overly scholarly or "arch," as some of the official Met podcasts can be. It feels more like a personal analysis than “this is high art” musicology or someone simply describing the plot (which most of us already know, anyway.)<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br />
</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Maybe best of all, this episode concludes with a complete performance of <i>Ah fors'è lui...Sempre libera </i>by Ms. Damrau. (Each podcast will feature a complete peformance of the aria under discussion.) The only quibble I have with the whole production is the "title" of the episode, which (maybe in my own snobbery) I think: (1) is inaccurate, because Violetta seems classy already; and (2) unnecessarily cheapens the podcast's image. But that is a <i>very minor quibble</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 18.0pt; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So, I finally listened, and I am glad I did.</span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">And now I cannot wait for the next episode. Take a half hour (plus or minus) and check out this wonderful podcast!</span><br />

<div style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://33pjuy2e41zo390bj112wsbc-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/DSC_5189-1200x801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="212" src="https://33pjuy2e41zo390bj112wsbc-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/DSC_5189-1200x801.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Georgia",serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 150%;">In a recent interview on a new (to me, but it's been around for
about five years) blog, Thomas Hampson talks about how the opera singing
industry has changed since he started his career. Back then...<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: "Georgia",serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">“There was this
foregone conclusion that with every operatic role and experience, you should
develop into something vocally and theatrically better,” Hampson says. “I don’t
see that kind of emphasis today.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: .5in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: "Georgia",serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">What he does see is a
focus not on developing opera singers, but on developing opera productions.
With the integrity of a singular production a growing priority, companies are
on the hunt for singers who fit a specific aesthetic – be it musical or visual;
and in response, singers are training not to become autonomous and unique
artists, but to become useful to the operatic industry. In fact, they’re
persuaded to do so, Hampson argues. “We no longer encourage young singers to
become singers. We teach them how to become voices that are useful for an industry
purpose. That bothers me a lot, as a pedagogue.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<a href="https://www.dw.com/image/44817116_303.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" data-original-height="394" data-original-width="700" height="180" src="https://www.dw.com/image/44817116_303.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">An excerpt from the latest <a href="http://www.the-wagnerian.com/2018/07/watch-now-30-minutes-of-bayreuths-new.html" target="_blank">Bayreuth <i>Lohengrin</i></a> provoked critical comments from opera fans. We know there are many who are willing to criticize a production sight-unseen. Others will reserve
judgement till they at least see photos or maybe a 5-minute video.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">My readers know by
now that I will argue that it’s not fair to pass judgement on a performance
without seeing/hearing/experiencing the whole thing.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">With most
"non-traditional" stagings, it's very hard to grasp a production from
excerpts. (Granted, this <i>Lohengrin </i>bit is a nice long excerpt.) <a href="http://regieornotregie.blogspot.com/2012/12/neuenfels-lohengrin-no-escape-from-rat.html" target="_blank">Neuenfels' <i>Lohengrin</i></a> just seems gimmicky if you only
see one scene, aria, or chorus; but it made sense (to me) once I watched it
through. <a href="http://regieornotregie.blogspot.com/2012/09/la-traviata-salzburg-2005-i-have-theory.html" target="_blank">Decker's <i>Traviata</i></a> (like it or not) makes a lot more
sense when you see it from start to finish, rather than just the Brindisi. And,
(one of my unsung—so to speak—favorites) Richard Jones' <i>Boheme</i> from <a href="https://regieornotregie.blogspot.com/2012/09/puccini-la-boheme-bregenzer-festpiel.html" target="_blank">Bregenz (2002)</a> kind of weirded me out until I saw the whole
thing.<u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><u1:p></u1:p>
<u2:p></u2:p>
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">All we are saying is, “Give (the) Piece a Chance.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , serif;">P.S. At this moment, while writing about <i>Lohengrin, </i>I'm

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the event, <i><b><a href="https://www.stonewallopera.com/" target="_blank">Stonewall</a></b></i> is a moving and explosive new American opera that captures the rage, grit, humor and, finally, hope of the LGBTQ community’s uprising in a Greenwich Village dance club on one hot night in June 1969. The work follows a diverse group of characters whose lives collide at that pivotal moment in history when the police push them too far and they find the courage to fight back.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-nKl9fkXe99m5r9nkQVVl1Cw8t-LJOmLrZiHtWnlT9fI0_4PeizP5N8KpLBKkLsVJpq-4S60BaWVjmcn45aEgPOqQfYmz1Og-xwUU-XL2W6pygITN-mnnXY45pu-QE4X1OktKiRk_UFMy/s1600/fabiano-corsaro-518x350.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="350" data-original-width="518" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-nKl9fkXe99m5r9nkQVVl1Cw8t-LJOmLrZiHtWnlT9fI0_4PeizP5N8KpLBKkLsVJpq-4S60BaWVjmcn45aEgPOqQfYmz1Og-xwUU-XL2W6pygITN-mnnXY45pu-QE4X1OktKiRk_UFMy/s320/fabiano-corsaro-518x350.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">…but I couldn’t. I kept
watching/listening because of Michael Fabiano, and he did a great job. I love
his singing, and generally he is a good actor (but he didn’t have a lot of help
here). The other principals sang well, and did their best at the acting part,
particularly Viti Praante and </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "pt serif" , "georgia" , "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Kristina Mkhitaryan</span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">. But they were left high and dry by
their director, Nicola Raab. She talked a good game; but it didn’t pay
off. </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Il Corsaro</i><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> is based on a Byron poem, so she cast Corrado
(the Corsaro) as the poet. In the first part of the opera, he remembered things
past (Acts 1 and 2) and seemingly lived out the conclusion in Act 3. Somewhere
in Act 2, it seemed he was working on writing the story.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Even knowing this, it
was rather confusing. Framing an opera as a flashback is not a new idea (but
it’s not a bad idea, either) but it wasn’t very clear. Gulnara, who in the
plot, dies at the end of the opera, seems to rise from the dead to do her first
scene in Act 1, then take poison and die before the Act 1 curtain. Then she’s
back for the finale of Act 3, apparently still dying. Corrado (Mr. Fabiano)
throws himself off a cliff (according to the libretto) at the end, but he and
the two sopranos (the baritone was really dead—and in another country) simply
turned away from the audience at the end of the final scene.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The staging looked like
a high school pageant. The chorus filed on and sang (pretty well, actually),
then filed back off—several times. I did like the use of projections on the
various scrims. The large blocks that make up the set were OK—not that
disappointing—but the singers seemed like they were not really given any
direction other than, “enter here, sing, then leave” and maybe perhaps, “act
distressed here.” Poor Vito Priante was left in front of a huge box to sing of his
love and frustration. At some point he is murdered but that wasn’t very clear
either. This is about pirates and sultans and harems. A little swashbuckling
would have helped the action—from start to finish.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If you want to do an
expressionistic (or is it impressionistic—I always get those mixed up?)
production, like the Komische Oper’s <i>Pelleas et Melisande</i>, then go
for it! Make it weird and disturbing. Stage <i>Lulu</i> in a giant
glass maze or <i>Parsifal</i> in a lab rat experiment or Wozzeck in a
puppet theater. But own it! This felt very half-baked.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I stuck with the
performance because I really like Michael Fabiano and the other principals I
noted above. <i>Il Corsaro</i> is not prime Verdi, but it’s pleasant
enough. It has some nice bel canto arias (mostly typical two-parters),
a few ensembles, and some nifty storm music. And since it’s a compact
opera—less than two hours—I don’t feel like I lost an important chunk of my
life. But if I ever revisit this production (or the opera in any form), I’ll
probably just listen. I felt bad for Michael, after his more major appearances
at the Met and major European venues, to be stuck in this provincial little
production. But at least he got to add another role to his vitae. This is the
kind of presentation that gives opera a bad reputation. It's on OperaVision for
a few months. Listen to it for Michael, but maybe with the fast forward button
in your hand.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: black; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I first encountered this
opera in a cheap download of the 1975 recording with Carreras, Caballe, and
Norman, which is fun. I recommend checking it out if you come across it. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Not only that, they archive each one for about 30 days. This
means if you had other things you had to do yesterday and couldn’t set aside
six hours to listen to the fabulous performance of <i>Parsifal</i>, that you still have time to do so.</span></span><br />

find the website a bit difficult to navigate; but perseverance pays off. You
