Tito @ Glyndebourne – Watch it Now!

If you have any interest at all in Mozart, La Clemenza di Tito, Claus Guth, Glyndebourne, staged opera, sung opera, Richard Croft, Alice Coote, mezzo-sopranos in general, or just about anything to do with music, singing, and opera, stop what you're doing and go to the Telegraph’s website (or Glyndebourne.com) and see this opera.

You have less than five days now.  According to fellow blogger, dehggial (who has an awesome review of the production) there is a planned DVD release, but: (1) nothing is life is 100% certain; and (2) see it now anyway—you can always buy the DVD later (I know I will). The new Salzburg Tito has its merits; and it will be online at Medici for a while. We can talk more about both of them later. Go watch/listen the Glyndebourne performance now!

  1. Thank you for the shoutout :-) I'm curious about your thoughts in general and even comparing the two productions (how often does it happen that Tito gets the treatment from two major opera festivals withing the same week?!)

    1. I really like this one a lot. I mean... Richard Croft and Alice Coote... and Guth!!! And they didn't make Servilia look like a little girl, OR like Annio's mom. I am very convinced by the ideas here and of course I have a lot more to say. But I will try to do a real review.

The Salzburg one I've not seen all of yet. I like the concept of Tito and Sesto belonging to separate "tribes" and I appreciate seeing most of the principles on stage most of the time. I get the idea of adding the extra music but I don't love it.. and I really did not like the funeral music after the finale.

I didn't hate that Tito dies at the end, but I was unhappy about him being stuck in the hospital bed for all of act 2. Maybe they could sit him up in a wheelchair or something. Overall, for Peter Sellars, I thought it was a pretty tame production. I feel like I'm becoming a grumpy old man, but don't f--- with my Mozart! (And I've already complained at your blog about the overactive continu-ist!) Overall I think the Glyndebourne singing is better, but I have to find more from Golde Schulz!!

    2. I just saw this :-) I generally agree, Glyndenourne is very coherent. Glad you got the email and enjoyed :-)

I've taken advantage of being on a plane yesterday and saw the Salzburg one to the end and yes, quite a letdown for Sellars. It starts interesting but it loses the thread in act II. I enjoyed the Non piu di fiori connection to the commemorative flower arrangements but I really didn't understand the Sesto-Vitellia connection and in fact, how Deh, per questo fit in if Tito didn't know Sesto for that long - especially since they cut Quello di Tito e il volto (presumably to make room for the extra music at the end?). It's almost like Sesto is an afterthought - there's this guy/girl who is pushed into this murder for some unclear reason and then he feels really bad. The end.

    3. I still have not seen the whole thing. I saw all of Act 1, and the last half of Act 2. It's almost as if Sellars thought "hey the title character is Tito. So we should really focus more on him and less on those other extraneous characters." Still looking forward to re-reviewing this AND Glyndebourne.

    3. In case you haven't found it, I sent you both the link to the emails you most recently used to post on my blog.

DR was in 2014! How time flies, eh? Returning next year with KL (unless baby #2 takes over).

    4. ps: in the future let me know if you have trouble with the G site (or Arte) and I'll help you out. It naturally works very well here (I was even thinking, as I ran into a couple of hiccups with the Salzburg transmission).
