Sunday Brunch – Magdelena Kožená Sings Mysliveček

This aria is included in her 2002 CD Le Belle Imagini, which I just noticed that I actually own. (It's good to flip through the library now and then!)

There are some real (and somewhat rare) gems here, and her voice was very very flexible 11 years ago (I am sure it still is, but in this recording, I find her particularly impressive.

The text (by Metestasio) and partial English translation can be found at lieder.net.

  1. I remember buying this CD in my early opera appreciation days! This is somewhat embarrassing to admit, but I think it was the first time I ever heard any of Gluck's opera music. (Or at least, the first time I heard it and was aware that that was what I was hearing.)

    1. the interesting thing is, once you hear some Gluck, it seems pretty easy to identify more Gluck. Meanwhile, on my iPod is a fairly new recording by Roberta Invernizzi and Sonia Prina: Amore e morte dell'amore. Their voices contrast but blend nicely. Am I Philistine if I say I can only take so much Monteverdi at one sitting?

    2. If that makes you a Philistine, I'm one too.

    3. Oh, whew! That being said, there is a really interesting-looking L'Incoronazione di Poppea from Lille conducted by Haim hair herself, and starring Max Emmanuel Cencic, Anne Hallenberg, Tim Mead, and a host of others over at http://liveweb.arte.tv/de/video/Die_Kronung_der_Poppea_in_der_Oper_von_Lille_Emmanuelle_Haim_Jean-Francois_Sivadier/
