The subject of the god-like voice of Richard Croft came up in
Twitterville this week, and of course that sent me searching for more of his
golden tones. He recorded a complete Orphée with Marc Minkowski. I'm not
sure the audio is of this live performance, or if the performance was in conjunction with the recording. Who cares? It's a great listen! Happy Friday!
My first encounter with Mr. Croft is his Ghandi in Met's 2010 Satayagraha. I have never experienced such complete and utter beauty could exist in human voice until I listened to him, especially the final aria. There's some snippets floating around in Youtube, but such a shame the Met refuses to release a DVD of this performance.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they might at least make it available on demand on their metoperafamily website. I'm not a big Glass fan, but I'd love to see the whole opera, especially with RC!
DeleteI believe the whole opera got uploaded to Youtube and Met promptly took it down..PBS site, after they aired Live in Met version, was littered with people begging for a DVD release. But so far, nothing from the Met.
DeleteThese 2 clips are the only ones left.

BTW, thank you for posting about Mr. Croft. I've been a huge fan for a while and it's good to see there are others who appreciate his amazing talent.
Something new to search for. My pleasure about posting RC clips. Glad to meet a fellow fan! :)
DeleteI just looked up his schedule out of curiosity - it appears he will be sighted (and heard) in LA and Toronto this year, but not in NY. Bah.
ReplyDeleteI think a field trip to Toronto is in order -- including an opera fan meetup with Lydia and John!
DeleteAaah. There's always such a sense of ease with Richard Croft's singing, isn't there? He somehow manages to make even the gnarliest of runs sound entirely reasonable and can spin a beautiful line forever. As I was listening to this video I also thought how appropriate the choice was in this 300th anniversary year of Gluck's birth. Nice!
ReplyDeleteMore gratuitous Croft posts please, Rob! :-)
I agree. "Ich baue ganz" is a case in point. Many an otherwise dependable Mozart tenor has been reduced to some sort of gargling in the coloratura of this aria, unwittingly making a good argument for skipping it entirely. But RC makes a great argument for NOT cutting this bit.

I, too, fully support the idea of gratuitous Croft postings, and since there are two of them, have some Dwayne:

Thanks for posting a clip from my all-time-favorite opera in the world! Now, of course, I need to find the rest of this performance!
