Is a beautiful voice enough?

Brava Jamie Barton!
More than just another
pretty voice!
I would say no, but it's said much more eloquently in this recent article from the Guardian:

The piece includes commentary from singers, coaches, directors, conductors, etc, plus a few audio/video clips.

  1. I think among those quoted, Finley put it best: without "a passionate heart" the singing "will only be larynx-deep and no amount of vocal talent will move the audience, and they would remain a circus performer."

    1. I have to agree with you on that. And Gerald Finley is living proof. In fact, even when he makes a rare less-than-lovely sound, he always does it with passion!

  2. Yes - and this is what makes Maria Callas and Jonas Kaufmann such giants!
Not perfect voices, yet very moving.
