Sunday Brunch – Verdi Requiem: Domine Jesu Christe (excerpt)
Decca offers us a teaser from the La Scala Verdi Requiem recorded earlier this year. It will be available in the U.S. on DVD, Blu-ray, and CD on September 3. Have you pre-ordered yours yet?
I have ordered the DVD of this performance. Interesttingly enough the only other DVD I have of the Requiem is also from La Scala, the HvK performance with a great cast of soloists.
I would love to know why JK left Decca (Universal) for Sony. I can only hope that we con continue to see DVD's from the tenor on this label, but considering their current tract record (Rosenkavalier, Falstaff and Don Giovanni all antiquities of dubious artistic merir--my opinion I admit) I am reluctant to even a "wait and see" position. At any rate I do look forward to the Verdi with great anticipation--with that cast would it be otherwise?
The DVD has been out for a while now here in Berlin--it's a best-seller, in fact--and is largely worth it. The Hostias singlehandedly turned me from a Kaufmann hater to a Kaufmann admirer; Harteros has some lovely moments up top; Pape brings an emotional depth that's sometimes scary (like he's channeling his Boris); and Barenboim brings out some dynamic contrasts that work quite well. On the negative side, Garanca looks and sounds like she just couldn't be bothered, the orchestra is just OK, and the chorus is awful: wobbly, flabby, and underpowered, to the point of seriously hampering the performance.

I have that HvK Requiem too. It's so wonderful! This recording and the Don Carlo coming from Salzburg should both be pretty amazing.
