Checking out the Lieder Board

I often provide printed texts of the music I post here. If I can find a good translation, I will post that as well.

One of the best sources I have found for opera and lieder translations is a little site called The Lied, Art Song, and Choral Texts Archive. Actually, the site is not so little. The archive currently indexes 75,564 texts with 17,008 translations to English, French, Italian, Dutch, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and others; and it is updated almost daily.

Not long ago, someone named Emily wrote to me and asked me to please take down her copyrighted translation from one of my posts. Of course, I took it down right away. Well, it turns out, though I still didn’t know it at the time (I had nabbed the translation from another site), that Emily is the same Emily who runs The Lied, Art Song, and Choral Texts Archive.

I find myself referring to her site several times a week, but I usually get there through Google, so I’d never really paid attention to the origin or management of the site. Today, while looking up Un moto di gioia, I happened upon the home page, where I discovered that Emily (the same Emily whose translation I pirated—not for profit of course, but copyright is copyright) is running the site mostly at her own cost.

So, I urge you, if you use the site as often, more frequently, or even less frequently than I do, send Emily a little donation. Or a big donation. Or something from her wish list. I just ordered a DVD for her. Tell Emily, “Thank you” for the wonderful resource she provides.

Dear visitors,
This project, begun in 1995, receives no public funding
* and is supported financially by roughly 0.02% of our visitors. The REC Music Foundation has generously provided server-space since 1997, but I have many costs in maintaining and expanding the website (and paying my bills). So if you find the information here useful, please consider making a donation or becoming a sponsor (or even helping me find a sponsor!). Your gift is greatly appreciated.

The donation button is not live here. Head over to Emily’s site to click and Donate.

  1. Your reminder has prompted me to go and make a donation - I use that website so much!

    1. Oh good! I am bad about donating to websites and I am glad I was able to do something myself AND get someone else to, too!
